Something Strange is Happening To Me!

February 1st, 2007 at 01:25 pm

I don't know if I'm just burnt out from working 80-90 hours a week or what is happening to me! For the past month I've felt a calling to quit my job as a area manager of convenience stores. I have no large savings to fall back on, I could probably make it a few months but would have to find ways to make at least $1200 a month for monthly bills and expenses. I'm tired of selling beer and ciggarettes to poor people and it has really been bothering me for awhile now. I feel I should be spending my time helping people, maybe volunteering etc, making some kind of difference instead of helping people kill themselves and waste away what little money they have.
I'm pretty simple, I wouldnt need much money personally for myself and my son to get by and I could cut the cable and cell phone bill down. I could watch every penny closely, I've given up soda in the last month and very rarely buy anything besides weekly groceries. I think I could do this and maybe I can make this some kind of challenge. It is scary to think there would be no steady paycheck of any sort though!

Is there any way to cut back the expenses?

Because, if you could do that, you can also cut back on the number of hours you have to work....

I think the common advice is to have a new job in hand before quitting the old one.

QUOTE once told to me " It is easier to find a job when you have a job"

I was in San Antonio in Nov & Dec.

Loved your area. We have our youngest daughter living in Abileen, Tx.

Yes, I would make sure I'd have some sort of income coming in. I'd like something I'd not have to do all the time so I'd have lots of free time to help other people. I do co-own a small business (thrift shop) in a town about 70 miles away. My mother runs it and we are only open five days a week, five hours a day and that has tremendously picked up since the first of the year. The first year was pretty tough, we are going into our second. I've thought about possibly selling at the flea market here, the people come from Mexico every weekend as we have a large flea market. Just possibilities, I need to think this out and plan, not do this impulsively.

Right cindilee - think and plan first then do!!

Have you looked for jobs in the non-profit sector?

I also left a job I dreaded going to.

You should not feel guilty or responsible for selling alcohol and cigarettes to the "poor", however. They will continue to purchase these things whether you are taking their money or someone else is. The responsibility is on th buyer.
Doing something you feel good about, however is important. It makes your life much easier, happier, and positive.
    Good luck!

I know why something strange is happening to you, you are working too many hours. Maybe you can get something similar (if you like the type of work) with not as many hours with a different type of client base. If you feel that you want to make a change, try to have something else in place. That said, when you are working so many hours and feeling bad about it, it's really hard to sell yourself to another employer. Try posting your resume online to see what's out there in your area. You never know.

Why don't you make a careful list of all your current monthly expenses. Dig up old bills or, if you don't keep them, start tracking EVERY expense for the month of February.

Total up the list, then go back and start seeing where and how much you could cut back on things like what you already mentioned. Doing it on paper is more accurate and more 'real' than just daydreaming about it.

Then you know what you're up against and how much of your current icnome you'd need to replace.

It can be very liberating to 'think outside the box.' Keep it up and you may be able to come up with some creative ways to exit out of those insane hours.

Well, I've been off work for two weeks, unpaid. I have had a great time messing around my house, don't want to go back in the morning. I had asked for a raise the day before I left for vac and was told we'd discuss when I get back. So, we will see what happens tomorrow. I have been kicking around a few ideas on how I can make money and still have time to do my own thing.
